Dropping your child off at nursery for the first time is a nerve-wracking experience for any parent – and it can be stressful for your child too. It might take them a little while to settle in.
There’s no getting away from the stressful nature of this process, but there are things that can be done to make it easier – both by you and your chosen nursery.
What you can do
First of all, be honest with yourself and acknowledge your feelings. If you’re anxious and worried about your child settling in, that’s perfectly normal – it would be more unusual if you weren’t worried!
When the time comes to drop your child off, you can do so gradually. We’ll appoint a key person to focus specifically on your child, and you can spend some time with them and your child initially to put them more at ease. When your little one seems happy playing with their key person, you can then begin to back away.
Once that relationship is established, your child should be much more comfortable and relaxed – so perseverance is key.
What we do at First Steps Day Nursery
We recognise that every parent and every child is unique, so do all we can to make the settling in process as flexible as possible. We’ll respond to your individual needs and allow you and your child to go at their own pace.
We’ll also take the time to understand your child’s routines, background, beliefs, stage of development and more. The greater our understanding, the better we’ll be able to tailor the support we offer to your child.
On average, our settling in process takes two weeks.
