The five locations we’ve compiled below are well worth a visit, and we’re confident they’ll go down a treat with your children.

Before we get started, if you’re looking for a day nursery in the Peterborough area, we have so much to offer here at First Steps. Find out more about our facilities or contact us today to book a tour.

Sacrewell Farm

Located on the outskirts of Peterborough, Sacrewell Farm is beloved by generations of families, many of whom visited first as children and then again with their own children years later. It’s been run as a charity since 1964, and offers visitors the chance to meet an array of beautiful farm animals, experience the magic of the hatchery, explore an 18th century watermill and get up close and personal with a collection of historic farming equipment.

Oundle Treasure Trail

Perfect for a day out in the summer sun, this exploration-based activity is fun for children of varying ages. They’ll have to follow the trail route, solving clues placed on buildings and monuments to find buried treasure. The scenic route circles around Oundle, covering just over two miles. Most families complete it in around 2.5 hours, making it an ideal afternoon activity.

Hamerton Zoo Park

Located near Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, Hamerton Zoo Park is home to an impressive collection of animals which are sure to delight and enthrall visitors of all ages. From cats big and small to bears, birds and reptiles, Hamerton has plenty for families to see. But that’s not all: it has two play areas, picnic areas and gardens, a coffee shop and the ‘Stroll-a-Safari,’ where you can get close to and feed a number of domestic animals.

Wicksteed Park

This all singing, all dancing theme park has been wowing visitors since 1921. Located in Kettering, Northamptonshire, it has attractions to suit all ages. From rollercoasters through to carousels and the world’s oldest water chute, there’s plenty here to put a smile on your children’s faces.

Fermyn Woods Country Park

If you’re looking for a more relaxed and serene excursion, Fermyn Woods Country Park should do nicely. Also located in Kettering, this beautiful country park immerses you in nature and provides plenty of opportunities to spot often-elusive wildlife. And once you’ve explored the trails, you can relax in the café or let your children have some fun in the play area.
