Can I Get Free Childcare?

February 04, 2022

The benefits of sending your child to nursery are numerous. It gives them a chance to mingle with others their own age, socialise and learn more about themselves and their new friends. Plus, the foundations will be laid for your child’s future learning. They’ll be prepared for what lies ahead at primary school, ensuring a smoother transition for both their benefit and yours.

But what about the cost? Can you get childcare funding so you don’t have to pay? You’ll be pleased to hear that the answer is yes.

The funding options

An array of funding options are available to suit your individual circumstances. As standard, all three and four-year-olds are eligible for up to 15 hours of funded early education each week. That’s regardless of your family’s earnings and any other benefits you receive.

This adds up to 570 hours per year, and can be taken over either 38 or 52 weeks.

You can receive a further 15 hours per week of free childcare (that’s 30 hours per week and 1,140 per year) if you and your partner are:

  • In employment
  • Earning at least the national minimum wage or living wage for 16 hours a week (£125.28)
  • Have a taxable income of under £100,000
  • Are UK residents

If you’re unsure as to whether or not you’ll qualify for the additional 15 hours, you can visit the government website and follow their step-by-step guide.
