How many days a week should a child attend day nursery?

November 24, 2023

There are so many considerations when sending your child to day nursery. It’s their first venture into the educational world, and in some cases may be their first introduction to the world outside their immediate family. One thing you may be unsure about is how often your child should attend. Is it every day? Or, are there other options? Let’s explore the attendance options that may be suitable for your child.

What are the attendance options?

Part-time attendance: Some parents choose to send their child to a day nursery on a part-time basis, which might be 2–3 days a week. This can be a good option for parents who work part-time or have flexible schedules.

Full-time attendance: For parents who work full-time, sending their child to a day nursery on a full-time basis, typically 5 days a week, may be necessary.

Transitional needs: Some parents use day nurseries as a way to help their child socialise and prepare for school. In this case, attending 2–3 days a week may be sufficient.

Flexibility: Many day nurseries offer flexible attendance options, allowing parents to choose the number of days that best suits their needs.

How often should my child go to nursery?

Is there a sweet spot for day nursery attendance? This will depend on your specific requirements and the needs of your child. However, it’s recommended that your child attend day nursery for a minimum of 15 hours a week.

One day a week is often considered too few. This is because your child will struggle to adapt to their new environment and may not be able to make meaningful connections or develop their social skills.

I want to send my child to day nursery, but can’t afford it?

You may be surprised to hear that you are actually entitled to 15 hours a week of free early years education for up to 38 weeks a year.

Bear in mind that this begins from the first school term after your child’s third birthday and finishes when your child reaches compulsory school age, or the term after their fifth birthday. You could also be eligible for a full 30 hours of funding.

This is government-backed funding that’s designed to support working families.
